Even though some prison inmates hate admitting that they have sex with one another because of the shame attached to sex between males, in Pietersburg in the Northern Province, prisoners are being taught of the risks of unprotected sex and HIV prevention. Every week, Takalani Nana – an NGO that works with children orphaned and abandoned as a result of AIDS and provides home-based care for people living with AIDS – visits Pietersburg Prison. Their aim is to educate inmates about responsible sexual behaviour. This initiative has resulted in the prisoners being much more open about matters sexual. When Health-e went with Takalani Nana on one of its visits, some prisoners even complained about the short supply of condoms at Pietersburg Prison.
