Provincial policy for rape survivors – part 3
Provinces have welcomed the announcement by the Minister of Health last month of national protocols for the use of anti-retroviral drugs for the treatment of rape survivors in South Africa’s public health facilities. Anti-retroviral therapy for survivors of sexual assault is prescribed on the basis that it has proven to reduce HIV infection among nurses and doctors who sustain needle stick injuries. The drugs in use are AZT and 3TC. In this report – part of a series of interviews with provincial Health MECs about the new protocols – Dr Gwen Ramokgopa, MEC of Health in Gauteng told Khopotso Bodibe that the protocols will be implemented before the end of this month (June.)
