Prescription of anti-retrovirals to rape survivors in South Africa is based on experiences that the drugs have been shown to reduce HIV infection in occupational settings where nurses and doctors are often at risk of sustaining needle-stick injuries, thereby standing a chance of HIV infection from contaminated blood.In this report, Khopotso Bodibe attempts to explain what post-exposure prophylaxis – anti-retroviral drugs now freely afforded to survivors of rape in public health facilities are ‘€“ and how they work.
