On this day last year, Cabinet made a significant move in the direction of gradually introducing anti-retroviral medicines in the public health sector when it announced that the drugs should be offered as an option to survivors of sexual assault. ARVs are prescribed after rape on the basis that they have proved effective in reducing infection amongst health workers in the event of needle-stick injuries. Sadly, however, as Khopotso Bodibe reports the government has done very little, if anything at all, to follow up on the watershed Cabinet decision of April 17th, 2002.
