Multiple and concurrent partnerships refers to the social practice of having sexual relations over a period of time with more than one person. When a large group of people have more than partner at a time, sexual networks are established.
Often, over time, condom use declines as the relationships gain momentum. But this increases the risk of HIV, as the virus can be easily passed on in the first few weeks of infection. Research is showing that this phenomenon could be a huge contributing factor toward the high rate of HIV infection in South Africa as well as the sub-continent.
