Granny, why can’t I go to school?
‘She sometimes asks me this in the mornings. I guess now that she sees that we are near her school she thinks she might be going there to learn,’ she said.
Ngxangashe said Endinako and her one year old sibling’s knowledge had grown immensely since attending the Safe Future for Kids creche. She said the children enjoyed going to crèche because they could play with other children and sing.
‘Endinako comes home and sings songs she learned at school. You can see that she is learning a lot. Another thing is that they eat at school and they are always safe,’ said Ngxangashe.
The closure of Safe Future for Kids has forced her to keep the children at home. She said having to buy food for the children and the rest of the family with the little money they had made it difficult for her to afford many things including the high crèche fees requested by other schools in RR section.
‘Most of the schools ask for large amounts of money. Crèches in the area cost up to R250 a month. If you have R500 how do you use the R250 to send a child to school and still have money to buy food? If you don’t have the money that means the children can’t go to school,’ she said.
She said she used to pay R40 for both her grandchildren to attend Safe Future for Kids.
