A young scientist from Gqeberha, Yolanda Mngcongo, is working to reduce hospital-acquired infections by creating eco-friendly ways to purify the air in healthcare facilities. These infections can occur in hospitals, putting patients at risk, especially those who are already vulnerable.
Research shows that 12% of patients in sub-Saharan Africa get infections while in the hospital. Yolanda’s innovative work won her the FameLab South Africa 2024 competition, which helps young scientists share their ideas with the public.
