Based on the latest survey conducted in October 2002, 26,5% of pregnant women were HIV positive. Although it is higher that the previous year (24,8%), the health department has described the rise as statistically insignificant.

Women aged between 25 and 29 years continue to be the most affected with an estimated 34,5% of pregnant women in this age group HIV positive.

An estimate 3,2% of women had active syphilis. It is also estimated that 91 271 babies became infected with HIV through the mother-to-child transmission route.
