Millions infected with HIV in 2006 – UNAIDS
The report confirms that the global epidemic continues to grow with evidence that in some countries there is a resurgence in new HIV infection rates which were previously stable or declining.
While sub-Saharan Africa is feeling the brunt of the epidemic, there have been increases in Eastern Europe and Central Asia where there are indications that infection rates have risen by more than 50% since 2004.
Globally, 39,5-million people are now living with HIV with 4,3-million new infections in 2006. This year 2,9-million people died of AIDS-related illnesses.
While sub-Saharan Africa has seen a rapid expansion of access to anti-retroviral therapy, a ten-fold increase in the last three years, little less than a quarter of the estimated 4,6-million people in need of ARVs are receiving it.
