Piot heads for London

The IAS released a statement welcoming Piot’s appointment:

The International AIDS Society (IAS) congratulates former IAS president Professor Peter Piot on his appointment as Director of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, a research-led postgraduate centre of excellence in public health, international health and tropical medicine.

‘€œThe IAS is delighted with this week’€™s announcement,’€ said Julio Montaner, President of the International AIDS Society. ‘€œWe congratulate Professor Piot on a great personal achievement, he will no doubt bring unique vision and experience to this new position. His appointment also highlights the important role that leaders in AIDS play in the broader field of global public health. Piot is both a fine example of an expert in public health whose work has made a huge impact on the response to AIDS, and of how lessons learned from HIV and AIDS can be translated into improving broader health systems.’€

“Professor Piot’s appointment as Head of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine at this crucial moment in the global response to AIDS provides real encouragement for all HIV professionals,‘€ said IAS Executive Director Robin Gorna.  ‘€œAs he takes on the role of Director at a leading institution addressing the continuing scientific and public health challenges, Piot’€™s experience in AIDS should prove significant in keeping HIV as a global public health priority.’€

Professor Piot served as President of IAS from 1992 ‘€“ 1994. He is the current Director of the Institute for Global Health and Professor of Global Health at Imperial College London.
