’16 Days’ event empowers E Cape community

38dbe0e29a97.jpgIn an attempt to address the high level of gender-based violence (GBV) in this region the Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) recently held a community gathering as part of their campaign during the ‘16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children’.

The event drew a large number of people from the community and representatives from various government departments, including the South African Police Service, Department of Health, Social Services and the Department of Justice, attended.

According to a participant, the government representatives showed a lot of interest in the event, and also used the opportunity to educate people on the right course of action should they be the victim of a crime.

Community members were empowered by the event and commented that the ’16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children’ should be held throughout the year and not only in December as there was a drop in violent incidents following the campaign.
