Villagers taught the importance of treatment adherence

The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) organised the event after research showed that people in these areas regularly default on their treatment. The event was not only for patients on antiretroviral treatment for HIV, but everyone taking medication for any condition, whether long- or short term.
“Taking treatment at the right time, and the right dosage will make people better, those in pain will have a welcome relief if sticking to what the health practitioners ordered,” said Mrs Vuyokazi Matiso Gonyela, the capacity-building officer for the TAC in the OR Tambo district.
The trainers stressed that good adherence does not only apply to taking your medication while feeling sick, but also finishing the course of treatment, even if you start to feel better.
The community was inspired by this event and agreed to start their own treatment clubs in order to help each other stick to their treatment.
