Two men charged with rape and murder of grandmother
Mutale Police Staion Warrant Officer and spokesperson Tshilidzi Nyambeni confirmed that Gumani Mphigalale, 26, and Adam Munyaiu, 21, have been arrested.
Maliavusa was on her home around 8pm after a attending a party when she was attacked.
“The suspects allegedly followed the granny immediately when she left the party where they had been drinking alcohol.
“They apprehended her, then they closed her mouth and nose and started raping her. The suspects also assaulted the woman, as she was bleding from the mouth. They robbed her of her R10 and cellphone before they left her for dead,” said Nyambeni.
The granny was discovered by community members who called an ambulance that took her to Donald Frazer Hospital. “Unfortunately she was confirmed dead when she arrived at the hospital.”
The suspects were arrested the following day after getting information from the people who were at the party.
The two have already appeared before Mutale Magistrate’s Court twice. On their last day of appearance, August 26, their case was postponed to September 18 while they are remanded in custody.
Nyambeni hailed the community for providing police with information that led to the arrest of the two suspects.
Mutale mayor Cllr Josephina Mukwevho has expressed shock over the incident.
She said she was shocked by the barbaric manner in which the woman had been attacked and killed.
“As Mutale Municipality, we strongly condemn this incident and we hope that suspects will face the full might of the law so that other prospective criminals can learn something,” said Mukwevho. She applauded the community for helping police with information that led to speedy arrest.
