Blocked manhole causes health concern
The Kwaisa family’s toilet is operating without problems, but stinking water flows from behind the house through the yard and on to the street.
Mahoko Kwaisa, who lives with his pensioned parents Johannes and Maria in Extension 7 East said: “I keep guarding kids as they sometimes play in the stinky water. I can’t sit with my friend under the tree in the yard. In the morning the smell is in the house as it had been locked for too long.”
Mahoko is unemployed and completed tuberculosis treatment four months ago at Tsholofelo Cilinic.
Johannes Kwaisa said: “I’m a hypertension patient. Sometimes I can’t breath properly. The worst is that we have to have supper in this bad smell, as it comes into the house.”
Johannes said the problem occurs every year and, even though it has been reported several times, the municipality either took their time or didn’t respond at all.
OurHealth attempts to get comment from the municipality were unsuccessful. City of Matlosana spokesperson Ntswaki Makgetha didn’t respond to the email sent to her.
OurHealth visited the family again after seeing municipal workers unblocking a toilet manhole in Extension 9, but the Mahoko family manhole had still not been fixed.
Johannes said: “I’m not happy at all. It’s affecting our health.”
