The AIDS lobby group outlines historic problems with the Free State’s HIV programme before detailing how provincial leaders refused to meet with TAC leaders in late January 2014 following alleged multiple instances of activist intimidation.
The statement then announces the formation of a citizen’s commission comprised of prominent South Africans to investigate threats made against activists. The document concludes with a list of demands for the Free State’s MEC for Health and Premier, and the South African National AIDS Council, namely:
- TAC calls on MEC Benny Malokoane to engage with the substance of its reports and accept TAC’s request for a meeting;
- TAC calls on Premier Ace Magashule to suspend MEC Malokoane pending the outcome of court proceedings relating to his alleged involvement in corruption;
- TAC calls on the South African National AIDS Council to urgently intervene in the Free State to defend the AIDS Council there from attack and to stand up for the rights of health activists.
