Intimate partner violence (IPV) is the most common form of gender-based violence, affecting 1 in 3 women and 1 in 6 men globally. Research suggests that childhood experiences of violence may play a significant role in its development.
A South African study found that over 50% of participants experienced IPV by age 28, and nearly half faced physical abuse by age 18. These findings, presented by Associate Professor Juliana Kagura, come from the Birth to 20+ Cohort Study, which has tracked over 3,200 participants from Soweto since 1989.
In a country with high rates of gender-based violence, this research emphasises the lasting effects of childhood trauma. Watch to learn more.
