Newsletter: South African National AIDS Council (SANAC) March 2014

SANAC logoAmong the newsletter’s major announcements is that behaviour change communication non-profit the Soul City Institute for Health & Development Communication has been selected as a principle recipient for the country’s recently awarded R 3 billion grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.

The publication also outlines the national programme proposed in early December to address sex workers’ HIV needs. The plan aims to, for instance, provide condoms, lubricants and psychological support. Government also envisions addressing sex workers’ multiple barriers to care through the plan.

Plans are also underway to conduct a national stigma index, as well as pilot the creation of HIV and tuberculosis legal clinics in Gauteng, Mpumalanga, the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal. Finally, the magazine reflects on the death of actress Lesego Motsepe, calling her death a tragedy that reminds many of the need for continued awareness-raising about the importance of life-long HIV treatment.
