Limpopo women get moving for better health
The 5 km fun walk was held in late August to commemorate Women’s Month and followed a similar event organised last year by 59-year-old Takalani Rambua. Rambua said she had been inspired to come up with a way to encourage women – especially older women – to stay fit.
Some of this year’s participants were more than 70 years old, she added.
“We decided to celebrate Women’s Month by participating in a fun walk so that we can have healthy minds and bodies,” Rambua told OurHealth. “We realised that many women, especially in rural areas, do not exercise and that makes them vulnerable to diseases like high-blood pressure.”
This year’s event saw about 100 more women participate than last year’s and Rambua said she was pleased to report that there had been no injuries on the more than two hour walk.
Participants from nearby villages that included of Maelula, Mutswane and Vuvha also took a moment to pray for peace in the country.
Although the fun walk happens only once a year, Rambau encouraged women to exercise in their spare time to remain healthy and fit.
