I am a professional nurse at Jericho clinic in the North West. I have been working at this clinic since April 2021 after leaving Unit 9 clinic in Ngaka Modiri, also in the North West. I left Unit 9 in March 2021 because of challenges that included consistent shortages of medication like ARVs, TB drugs and psychiatric drugs. Little did I know that the problems I thought I was running away from at Unit 9 would catch up with me at Jericho clinic. My first few months at the clinic were great. I enjoyed working here because I did not experience many challenges in providing good patient care. In 1994, when the African National Congress (ANC) came to power, it outlined in its election manifesto equitable access to healthcare, envisaged by an integrated, equitable and comprehensive health system. In 2011, the NHI journey started when the NHI Green Paper was published for public consultation. This was followed by NHI pilot projects in 2012 with a focus on health system strengthening initiatives.
