South African scientists, with colleagues around the world, are actively engaged in the search for a vaccine to prevent HIV infection. Researchers at universities and at the National Institute for Virology of South Africa are both partners and competitors in their bid to find the critical vaccine. The National Children's Forum on HIV/AIDS helped break the silence among children regarding their experiences of HIV/AIDS. The forum encouraged children to speak freely and gave them the chance to speak to government representatives about their problems in the hope of getting assistance.
