The Winterveldt HIV/Aids Project which used to receive Pepfar funding to care for 1 200 orphaned and vulnerable children with the help of 17 community caregivers, is facing closure.
Founder and Manager Marks Baloyi said they do not know how to break the news to the children and the caregivers who will all lose their jobs early next year. Baloyi says their closure would mean that these children no longer receive the food they relied on.
Another NGO, Hope for Life, which provides antiretroviral treatment and social support to 1 200 people living with HIV, is also closing down with 20 staff members, including a social worker, set to lose their jobs.
A staff member who asked to remain anonymous confirmed the imminent closure.
The health district office said they were not aware of the closure of these projects and referred all queries to the province.
