Mosidi’s six-year-old son, Warona Marumo, was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome at the age of one. The syndrome affects the kidneys, and patients can symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting and muscle wasting. Patients may also eventually experience kidney failure. The condition often manifests in children between the ages of one and five years of age.
Mosidi was expecting to donate a kidney to Marumo, and the process was almost finalised when she fell pregnant. Doctors have now advised her to wait a year after giving birth before donating.
Warona is on a waiting list for a kidney transplant at Sandton’s Mediclinic Morningside in Johannesburg, where he is receives dialysis twice a week.
Representatives of the Kidney Beanz Trust Fund at the hospital have been visiting Warona’s home helping ensure that he does not fall behind in school.
Mosidi said her son had improved greatly since receiving dialysis, and she hoped that he would remain well. Mostly, she said, she wished that a suitable donor could be found.
