Guidelines: Expanded Program on Immunisation Vaccine Guidelines, Manual
Published by the National Department of Health, the 2010 guidelines include an updated immunization schedule including the two new vaccines.
The document introduces new guidance as it pertains to the pneumococcal conjugate and rotavirus vaccines.
The 16-page paper also reviews old guidance, for example, prohibiting the use of the BCG vaccine among HIV-positive babies. The document also advises that:
- All health facility personnel, including cleaners, should receive a Hepatitis B vaccination upon starting employment, followed by a second dose a month later and a third dose six months after the initial jab;
- “Every clinic day is an immunisation day: Never miss a chance to immunise;” and
- That certain reconstituted vaccines must be discarded after six hours.
