The standards seek to harmonise HIV prevention, treatment and care provided to key populations including sex workers and long-distance truck drivers throughout the region’s transport corridors. This follows studies conducted along southern African transport corridors that found HIV prevalence rates of about 50 percent among sex workers with about one in four long distance truck drivers surveyed were also living with HIV.
According to the guidelines, minimum packages of services should also include treatment for other conditions including tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, malaria, hypertension, diabetes, and sexual and reproductive health services including family planning.
The guidelines also include sections on management mechanisms, including financing, quality assurance, and monitoring and evaluation.
