Some students go to university to get an education, but leave with not only a degree but also HIV or a sexually transmitted infection (STI), according to University of KwaZulu Natal’s HIV/AIDS Programme co-ordinator Nomonde Magantolo.
Sandile Ngcobo’s day starts at 4am. By the time his 16-hour shift as a Pietermaritzburg taxi driver is over, local clinics are closed and that is why Ngcobo says he welcomed the chance to test for HIV and tuberculosis (TB) at work.
The communities of Mafunze and Maswazini say they would ranther pay more to travel to a nearby clinic than use the one in nearest their communities.
