Key data from April 2016 PACSA Monthly Food Price Barometer reveal that Month-on-month (m/m), the PACSA food basket increased by R54.67 (2.9%) from R1 869.39 in March 2016 to R1 924.06 in April 2016.

 Year-on-year (y/y) the PACSA food basket increased by R295.02 (18.1%) from R1 629.04 in April 2015 to R1 924.06 April 2016.

 Foods driving inflation in the April food basket include: maize meal, samp, white sugar, sugar beans, milk and Maas. Vegetable prices remain volatile, with prices back up this month.

 Maize meal prices continue to trend upwards. The m/m increase for maize meal (25kg) was R8.16, moving the total cost to R217.82; with the y/y increase at 32.7%, with a bag costing R53.66 more than it did 12 months ago (R164.16 vs. R217.82).
