Great disparity in lives of SA children

CAPE TOWN. '€“ South African children have equal rights under the Constitution, but the worlds into which they are born and their opportunities in life are very unequal. This was the message Katharine Hall, senior researcher at the Children'€™s Institute (CI) at the University of Cape Town shared yesterday at the launched the South African Child Gauge 2012, an annual review on the state of South Africa's children.

Gauteng discusses future of lay counsellors Living with AIDS # 537

The Gauteng Health Department held talks with lay HIV counsellors and other community health workers this week to discuss options of managing and incorporating them into the health system. Currently, they are employed through various non-governmental organisations and are not recognised as employees of the department.

BMJ: The imprisonment of Cyril Karabus is deplorable

Today a 77 year old paediatric oncologist sits in prison in Abu Dhabi while he waits to be retried for an offence he was originally convicted of more than 10 years ago, in absentia. Although that original conviction has been set aside he has been charged again with manslaughter, even though the courts apparently have no files or contact with the family of the dead patient.
