TAC aims to raise R10 million in November
Health-e News broke news of the TAC’s financial crisis in September and the TAC has managed to raise less than R7 million of the R35 million it needs to stay open in 2015, the group announced yesterday.
“This is not the time to cut civil society but a time to expand on the response to HIV/Aids,” said TAC board member and executive director of public interest law organisation Section27 Mark Heywood.
He added that the TAC’s survival now depends on the donations of ordinary citizens although the group will be looking to international funders for the remaining R25 million it needs.
As part of fundraising efforts, activists including TAC former general secretary Vuyiseka Dubula will be running the upcoming Soweto Marathon in the TAC’s trademark “HIV positive: t-shirts. She will be accompanied by three buses of activists running under the banner, “Running for our lives.”
The group has once again protested against official World AIDS Day proceedings, which it has alleged will cost the state R 3million. Instead the TAC will be celebrating the ten-year anniversary of HIV treatment in the public sector.
