HIV and AIDS worsens SA’ s child mortality Living with AIDS # 433

The HIV and AIDS epidemic is largely responsible for the increase of child mortality rates in South Africa, Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi said at a media briefing early this week. His remarks follow the deaths of six babies at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and 10 at Natalspruit Hospital on Gauteng'€™s East Rand, recently.

AIDS activists detained by Tanzanian Authorities at World Economic Forum on Africa

Thursday 6 May, Windhoek -- On Wednesday 5 May, the opening day of the World Economic Forum on Africa (WEF) in Dar Es Salaam, a group of nine AIDS activists from across the continent were detained for questioning by Tanzanian authorities after they handed over a memorandum entitled '€œHealth is Wealth'€, which emphasised the need for increased investment in health and particularly HIV, TB and Malaria in Africa, to two prominent speakers at the WEF.

Motsoaledi to address 25 000 in Vienna

Health minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi will address the world'€™s largest AIDS gathering in Vienna later this year. Organisers of the 18th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2010) announced that President Bill Clinton, founder of the William J. Clinton Foundation and 42nd President of the United States, and Motsoaledi will be among 19 high-level speakers who will address an estimated 25 000 conference attendees.
