
E Cape demands better health services

TSHWANE. - Daniel Vilakazi is a 19-year-old from Soshanguve where he lives in Block TT with his parents. He is also a recovering drug addict who was until recently a regular user of a concoction called nyaope.

SOSHANGUVE. - It's early on a Wednesday morning and children are crying because of the heat while waiting in line at the JJ Clinic in the Tshwane health district. The clinic often sees more than 150 patients a day who comes to consult on various health problems.

LUSIKISIKI. ' Five governmental departments in this Eastern Cape village have been without electricity for weeks. The district offices for the Departments of Education, Health, Social Development, Traffic and the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) have been unable to provide services to communities here because their electricity was cut.

MGUNGUNDLOVU. - Challenge for Women is an organisation that empowers girls and women in their daily struggle against abuse.

BETHLEHEM. ' Sanitation in the Bohlokong area in the Free State is so poor that it has started affecting the health of children in the Baipeing community in Bethlehem.

VHEMBE. ' A 19-year-old girl from Gumela village in Limpopo thought she was solving her problems by going for an abortion, but was actually causing more problems than she thought.

VHEMBE. ' Requests to the Department of Education to upgrade facilities at the Mafukani pre-school have fallen on deaf ears, and have eventually resulted in a four-year-old nearly losing her life after being bitten by a snake in the sub-standard toilet facilities at the school.

LUSIKISIKI. - Nkosiphendule Ngwendu, or Di, as people call him, lives in Mevana Administration Area in Lusikisiki. He is 32 years old and living with HIV.

VHEMBE. ' A group of women from this community volunteers their time and services at the local Matavhela Clinic without expecting anything in return.

LUSIKISIKI. ' The community of the Eastern Cape village is rallying behind a rape survivor whose case is only being heard in court this month ' three years after the traumatising attack took place.

MGUNGUNDLOVU. - Imbalenhle community health clinic in KwaZulu Natal recently commemorated Pharmacy Week. The theme for the week was "Toward Quality Care Together", and it aimed to educate patients about medicine, particularly those on chronic medication.

LUSIKISIKI ' Two men, aged 26 and 30, late one night last week forced their way into 10-year-old Nasiphi's* home in the Bazana location in the Eastern Cape and raped her.

LUSIKISIKI. ' Community members, health care staff and activists from this Eastern Cape village were up in arms about the poor conditions at the local Village Clinic.

LUSIKISIKI. ' Residents from Mevana district in the Eastern Cape were stunned by the level of service they received from the emergency services in the area. This community, who is used to long queues, medicine stock outs and generally poor health services was pleasantly surprised when the emergency services arrived within minutes after they logged a call.
